How to start dropshipping

A realistic start-up sequence for dropshipping: pick a niche, find a supplier, price for profit, build the store, get the first order, then scale.

Most people start dropshipping in the wrong order — store first, product later, pricing never. This is the sequence that actually survives the first month.

If you are selling inside Bangladesh, read this first and then follow the country-specific guide, because payments and delivery differ substantially here.

01Pick a narrow niche you can explain

A niche is not a category, it is a customer. "Home appliances" is a category; "small kitchen gadgets for new families in Dhaka flats" is a niche you can write ads for.

Narrow beats broad at the start because you only need a handful of products and one message.

02Find a supplier before you build anything

Your supplier determines your cost, your shipping time and your return policy. Choose the supplier first, then design the shop around what it can actually deliver.

  • Check real shipping times to your customers, not the advertised best case
  • Confirm how returns and wrong items are handled
  • Test with one personal order before listing anything

03Price for profit, not for cheapness

Set your price from cost upward: supplier cost, delivery, payment fees, expected return rate, then margin. Undercutting a marketplace on price is not a strategy when you have no scale.

A 25–40% margin over landed cost is a workable starting band for most local products.

04Build the smallest working store

You need a store name, five to fifteen products, honest delivery information, a working checkout and a phone number people can reach. Nothing else on day one.

05Get the first order by hand

Your first orders should come from people you can talk to: your own network, community groups, and a small amount of targeted traffic. Fulfil them personally and note every problem.

Only scale spend once one product has delivered successfully several times.

Questions

How much money do I need to start?
Enough to cover supplier cost and delivery on your first orders plus a small test advertising budget. No inventory purchase is required.
Can I start dropshipping for free?
You can start without paying for inventory or a paid plan on a free tier, but courier fees, supplier cost and any advertising are real cash costs.
How many products should I list?
Five to fifteen. More products at the start splits your attention and hides which item actually sells.

Do this in DropShop BD
